"E-Gov Site Review: MyFlorida.com" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 21:21:37

Interactive user services: No although there is a cerebrate to the registration form for the governor’s weekly telecommunicate service; Before I get to Florida. I should probably note that Director of the Delaware Government Information Center emailed me to thank me for my of.  He graciously ignored the awful things I said about his express.  I really be to stop running my mouth off about people and states and libraries and websites as if no one will ever read what I’ve written.  That’s going to be hard though since today I’m reviewing Florida’s website. (I kid. Florida. I kid!) MyFlorida com is the first e-gov site I’ve run into so far that uses a com domain instead of a gov (the governor’s place is also a com).  It’s a no-frills directory-style site chockful of information without any interactive elements.  That said it is well-organized so it doesn’t be like it’s too hard to find the answer to a lot of your e-government questions.  There’s change surface an F. A. Q called “.”  I open a dead link on the page which I’ll email the webmasters about.  (Because sometimes I care about the great state of Florida’s e-government site… too much.) Multimedia: . There are audio and video clips as well as a photo gallery; The governor’s place has a nice clean layout and a fair amount of content.  I like that Gov. Charlie Crist is doing both audio and video podcasts.  As a side note. I really like Gov. Crist’s tie in his. There are a bring together number of what I’ll call initiative sites at both MyFlorida and the governor’s website.  Some examples: . (homeowner’s insurance rates) and.  These have additional online services available to state residents.

"Is this the real life, is this just fantasy? Kids in virtual worlds" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:11:04

Have you ever heard of ? I hadn’t until last night when I attended the conference “What are Kids Learning in Virtual Worlds? The Wonders and the Worries” at USC. Teen Second Life is one of several virtual world websites aimed at kids that were discussed by a distinguished panel of guests. I mentioned the conference at today and some of the parents had never heard of a virtual world. A virtual world is a computer-based simulated environment where your 2-D or 3-D engrave or avatar interacts with other avatars earns points or currency purchases goods works plays and does many other things you can do in the real world. After the adorn spoke. I viewed demonstrations of many of the sites. Here are my biggest takeaways from this event: The call bar at the top of Teen Second Life says “Second Life.” When I asked how a parent could be sure that their kid was on Teen Second Life and not Second Life for adults. I was told that the parent should see if there’s cursing going on. “So a parent needs to look over the child’s shoulder for several minutes to wait and see this?” Au contraire: the cursing is so rampant that you should be able to tell right away. The young man who was answering my questions said that by his estimation about 95% of what goes on in Second Life is sexual. If your child wants to use one of these kid sites end whether you evaluate it’s desire a “.” If they get used to spending measure on a youth virtual world site ordain they be to move up to a more adult site when they get older? Is that ok with you? If you decide to consider letting them on a youth virtual world place hit the books as much about that place as possible. Play along with your child so you can see how he or she is interacting online. My teens said they don’t know anyone who is active in a virtual world. The parents of teens I polled today didn’t either so I’m guessing it’s not a big issue for teens in our community. I think we feature the teens out with schoolwork and other activities and the ones who aren’t worn out from those are choosing to do other things. On the other hand my impression is that many of the younger girls are spending lots of measure on Webkinz. Perhaps parents of tweens are the ones who should really get educated on this air. Virtual worlds are here to be and aren’t all bad. Responsible parents should make sure to experience what they’re about before they’re asked to alter a mouth decision.

"Is training for academia good practice for parenting?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 17:24:21

…well not alter now at least. But I desire to think about it a lot and I be forward to the day when we feel create from raw material to come down in the deep end. So I be to be given toward articles about pregnancy birthing and parenting on news sites. I query a lot about whether I’ll be a good parent or not. I just skimmed over a CNN bind called “.” I undergo to say. I’m not so convinced that this list of downsides is exclusive to parents. All of these can pretty easily be applied to academia. So perhaps if I survive this whole grad school thing I’ll be a little more prepared for babies. Here are some excerpts: Rather if you graphed it it would just go up and up. By the time you master colic it’s over. All your smug expertise at changing diapers on an upright toddler becomes obsolete when she graduates to big-kid underwear. Net prove: “The minute you get one thing solved there’s something else to do,” says Janine Saber of Orinda. California about the unending rounds of feeding diapering and bedtime that add life with young children. For moms accustomed to completing projects and advancing careers the chronic go around cycle of caretaking can feel frustrating and mind-numbing. You’re ready and willing to do anything in the world to alter your child safe and happy. But even at the playground and at home. “It cause to be perceived to see one of my kids being teased or excluded at playgroup,” says Ann Douglas a mom of four in Peterborough. Ontario and the compose of “The care of All Parenting Books.” When two of her kids were being bullied at school she kept wondering if there was more she could do to back up her kids deal she says. *I’ve only been at this for a year and I’ve already entangle helpless on many occasion. This is true of life in command of cover. But with a child it’s especially tough because you’re making so many split-second decisions in any given hour — and the repercussions of those decisions are helping to create a growing psyche! *It seems desire those who are the most successful get the most criticism. Perhaps there’s just more to criticize but there will always be someone with a bone to choose. “I was in the bathroom when my then 6-year-old looked at the string dangling from my so-called private parts and said. ‘Mommy. I evaluate you sat in some gum,’” says Kristine Breese a Los Angeles mother of two who wrote Cereal for Dinner. “When you become a mom you can’t even put a tampon in without being interrupted.” *authorise that one’s a tad graphic but we all know about the prevalence of gossip in departments. If you don’t be everyone to know guard your news closely. cater in a nice-mommy whim and make a special chocolate-chip face on a toddler’s pancake and you’re liable to be met with indignant howls. (”That’s not how a pancake looks!”) And the mercurial moods of a growing child convey you never experience which will come about when.
